The process begins with fieldstone slabs of slate, sandstone and other metamorphic stone, or precut tile for variety. Freeform pieces are hand chiseled and filed. Other pieces are hand cut, routered, and deburred with a variety of hand and power tools. A piece may be lighty polished or polished to a smooth and silky finish.  A variety of stone sealers are used on the finished work.   Rougher stones get several coats of a low sheen sealer.
